Citizens Advice County Durham is proud to announce its 85th anniversary, marking nearly a century of dedicated service to the people of County Durham. Since its founding in 1939, the charity has provided vital support, advice, and advocacy to thousands of residents, helping them navigate the challenges of daily life.
To commemorate its 85th anniversary, Citizens Advice County Durham will be hosting a series of events to celebrate the charity’s history, honor the contributions of its dedicated volunteers and staff, and raise awareness of the services available to the people of County Durham.
Originally established during the tumultuous years of World War II, Citizens Advice County Durham began as a small operation focused on helping residents manage wartime difficulties. Over the decades, it has grown into a critical resource for the community, offering free, independent, confidential, and impartial advice on a wide range of issues, including debt, housing, employment, benefits, and consumer rights.
Edward Pickering, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice County Durham, reflects on this significant milestone: “For 85 years, we have been a trusted source of help and support for the people of County Durham. Our history is rich with stories of individuals and families who have faced difficult circumstances and found a way forward with our help. As we celebrate this anniversary, we also renew our commitment to being here for the community, whatever challenges the future may bring.”
Throughout its history, Citizens Advice County Durham has adapted to the changing needs of its community. From assisting with post-war recovery to addressing modern challenges such as the cost-of-living crisis and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisation has remained a steadfast partner to those in need. Last year alone, Citizens Advice County Durham helped over 22,000 people, providing them with the advice and support necessary to improve their lives.
“We are immensely proud of our history and the positive impact we’ve had on the community,” added Edward, “Our success is due to the unwavering dedication of our volunteers and staff, who give their time and expertise to support those in need. As we look to the future, we remain committed to ensuring that everyone in County Durham has access to the advice they need to overcome their challenges and move forward. We offer in person advice in 15 locations across the county along with digital advice via phone, webchat and email”
Citizens Advice County Durham would like to thank the community for its ongoing support over the past 85 years. As the charity celebrates this milestone, it also looks forward to continuing its mission to provide essential advice and support to all who need it.
